An Update on the Enhancement Workshops - Bill Roberts, Project Consultant

Industry workshops are currently being held across the States/Territories to gather data to identify updates and changes to the Printing & Graphic Arts Training Package in relation to training content; qualifications; units of competency; and assessment.

Workshops have been held so far in Brisbane (Windsor International Hotel); Canberra (Canprint Communications, Fyshwick); Sydney (Hannan Print, Alexandra); Launceston (Grand Chancellor Hotel); Victoria (RMIT Printing);  Hobart (Wrest Point Hotel); Adelaide (ASU Offices); and Perth (PIAA Offices).

Substantial amounts of data have been gathered which is being validated and confirmed with participants in each State/Territory. Each workshop has managed to engage a wide cross section of the industry as well as private and public provider personnel, industry associations, union personnel and STA officers. About 120 participants have attended the workshops in total.

Feedback about the workshops from the participants has been very positive and complimentary. The workshops have also enabled the opportunity for an exchange amongst industry participants about the broader training system/delivery and labour market issues being faced.

The goals set down for Phase One (Research and Analysis) are clearly being met and will provide a sound basis for Phase Two (Review and development of changes to the Training Package)

SP AusNet Energy Innovation Festival - Wonthaggi

On Friday 20th March and Saturday 21st March 2009, the SP AusNet Energy Innovation Festival at Wonthaggi showcased the latest in renewable energy, vehicle and building products and techniques, solar and water technologies plus information on courses and career options for those interested in training and working in the field. The event also supported the Wonthaggi Human Powered Grand Prix.

Businesses, schools, individuals and community groups were invited to enter to display their innovations, creativity and practical solutions to the challenges of energy use and conservation. In addition, the EPIC Industry Training Board, in conjunction with SP-AusNet, was asked to provide several industry ambassadors to give presentations to approximately 200 secondary school students, across 5 separate marquee presentations.

The theme of these presentations was to provide advice to the students and their teachers on the careers associated with each presenter, including why each career pathway was selected, and how the presenters lives had evolved as a result of their career choice.

Clean Energy Council employee, Vicky Grillakis was a clear favorite with the students and teachers, especially when it was mentioned that Vicky had travelled Australia in her role as a project coordinator and clean energy advisor. SP-AusNet’s Paul Hoffman provided advice on his traineeship as a designer of electrical supply industry system infrastructure—whilst EPIC ITB’s own Mychelle Emmett provided information on how and why she selected a career as an electrician—in what is traditionally a male dominated industry sector. All three presenters stated that since entering their chosen fields of experience, a broad range of career enhancements had lead them to pursue further study and work experiences.
