The Wright stuff… Ben Wright from Box Hill TAFE takes out the profile21 design competition
The Challenge: EPIC Industry Training Board asked Victorian TAFE students, to design the logo, business cards and letterhead for our new web based profiling system profile21, which is used by employers and RTO’s to track and assess work based activities, professional development and training progression (based on either tasks or units of competency).
Students were provided with a design brief which included background information about the system, a colour scheme and target market, but the rest was up to them. The designs were judged by the staff at EPIC, with one notable exception. We asked Ron Patterson, Joint Chairman of the EPIC ITB Board and General Manager (VIC/TAS) and National Sales Manager at Printing Industries Association of Australia (PIAA), to give us a hand. Given Ron’s involvement with the National Print Awards for a number of years, we knew we had the right man for the job.

We were blown away by the talent of the design students, and whilst this meant we were spoiled for choice, Ben’s design really caught our eye. Both Ben, and Elise Wade (the runner up) are in their final year of the Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design at Box Hill TAFE, and have already amassed a number of design awards and projects between them. Rana Tallo, who is studying a Diploma of Printing and Graphic Arts at Kangan Institute, also earned herself an honourable mention with her funky designs.
In addition to taking out the profile21 design competition, Ben Wright’s other honours include winning a poster design competition for Beanie Boy and a snow board design competition for Chemical Storm, which further highlight the versatility of this young up-and-coming designer. Ben’s talent might have something to do with his Dad, “Dad’s a sign writer, so I’ve been around design my whole life”, and boy, does it show! Darren Smith (Box Hill TAFE Course Co-ordinator) confirmed what a consistent and excellent student Ben is, remarking on Ben’s ability to process the information in the design brief and get to the core of what the client wants.
Ben recently completed a 3 week placement at Madmen Entertainment, and would love one day to work at an advertising firm using his creative talents on promotional material. He is enjoying learning the web developer side of the business, and is currently working on a project within this space.

Ben Wright with PIAA’s Ron Patterson, accepting his award and Apple IPAD2, Ben will also receive entry into the Victoria PICA awards 2012. The runner up, Elise Wade and honourable mention, Rana Tallo also received double Village Cinema passes for their efforts.
Box Hill TAFE Graphic design course incorporates work experience and assists students to find industry work and projects in their final year, meaning Ben is already looking to the future, and is open to opportunities for employment. To find out more about all three talented designers, click on their names to view their work profiles (Ben, Elise and Rana).
Ben’s design will feature in the profile21 web based application, as well as on promotional products, marketing material, staff uniforms, smart phone and tablet apps and the new profile21 web site, which will be launched on May 14th.
